Connie Kleinjans: "Spirsa," acrylic, 24x18"

Spirsa

by Connie Kleinjans
24x18"
acrylic and mixed media

I did this one as a demo for a workshop I taught. The mixed media includes stucco patch as well as drywall tape. The first step in the process is to work intuitively and see what arises. Then I go in and refine it: Eliminate distractions, reinforce the focal point and so on. This can be really hard, since you often fall in love with some small element. But it's about choices, and about the dialogue.

Afternoon Delight - Original Acrylic Contemporary Modern Still Life by Pennsylvania Daily Painter Pat Koscienski

"Afternoon Delight"
20" x 10"
Acrylic on canvas

"Afternoon Delight" was painted for Lela Stankovic's Paint and Draw Together Challenge 6....Fresh Figs. I love figs and have 3 trees in our yard. Every year for the last 5 years, I get figs, green and hard, much the size of marbles. But they never ripen for me. So, to do this challenge made me think of sitting around the pond in the afternoon, eating fresh, ripened figs and drinking champagne. This will be the closest I get to that delightful dream unless I find them at a market someplace in the area, and even that is a rarity for this area of South Central Pennsylvania. This is the second watercolor and pastel hibiscus, I just love to paint this flower, especially the hybrids. They are so interesting and of course gorgeous. There are so many different varieties today with a few horticulturalists experimenting with them. It is a lot of fun to attempt painting them in different media. I hope you enjoy. Mahalo!

I started this painting with a very loose watercolor wash over the flower sketch and a deeper wash for the background. I thought the background worked well so did not work pasted into it at all. Thanks for looking.
